Andasibe National Park is the closest and most accessible rainforest from the capital. When combined with the Palmarium Reserve, these two exceptional sites offer an impressive diversity of wildlife — from the largest Lemur, the Indri, to some of the smallest species like the Mouse Lemur. Both are ideal destinations for observing Madagascar’s endemic Birds, Reptiles, Amphibians, and Insects. Botanists are particularly drawn to this region, as a large majority of plant species found here are unique to the island.
Depart from the capital and drive eastward through the scenic landscapes of Madagascar’s central highlands. Along the way, you may spot some interesting birdlife such as Kingfishers, Egrets, and Hamerkops.
After lunch, enjoy a guided visit to a locally managed community park for your first immersion in the mid-altitude rainforest of Andasibe. Search for the Indri — the largest living lemur — and the elegant Diademed Sifaka.
In the evening, embark on a night walk to discover Madagascar’s nocturnal fauna: Mouse Lemurs, Leaf-tailed Geckos, Frogs, and sleeping Chameleons and Birds.
After breakfast, head to Mantadia National Park, a pristine primary rainforest. It is home to iconic species such as the Indri, Diademed Sifaka, Black-and-white Ruffed Lemur, and a rich variety of endemic Birds and Butterflies. You may also encounter the brilliantly colored Baron’s Mantella frog and several species of orchids (in season).
Enjoy a picnic lunch and return to the lodge in the afternoon.
Morning visit to the Analamazaotra Special Reserve, where you have a high chance of observing the Indri and hearing its hauntingly beautiful call echo through the forest. Other species you may encounter include the Diademed Sifaka and several smaller Lemurs.
In the afternoon, enjoy some leisure time or a relaxed stroll through Andasibe village.
Another optional evening walk offers the chance to spot additional nocturnal creatures.
Travel further East, followed by a one-hour boat ride to reach the Palmarium Reserve. After lunch, explore this private sanctuary, known for its unusually close Lemur encounters. Species include the Indri, Red-bellied Lemur, Black-and-white Ruffed Lemur, Crowned Lemur, and Black Lemur. You’ll also see colorful day Geckos, Frogs, and Chameleons.
At dusk, take a magical boat excursion to the Aye-Aye Island to spot this elusive and bizarre nocturnal Lemur — a creature that looks like it is made from parts of various animals: the tail of a fox, ears of a bat, rodent-like incisors, coarse fur, and eerie, skeletal fingers.
Spend the morning exploring the reserve again, enjoying easy walks and more rewarding wildlife sightings. The afternoon offers the opportunity to visit a nearby traditional fishing village along the lakeshore.
An optional evening walk within the reserve can be arranged before dinner.
After breakfast, board the boat back to Manambato and continue your drive to Antananarivo. Lunch will be served en route. End of services upon arrival in the capital.
