Green Pigeon Tours

Central Highlands

Journey through Madagascar’s living highlands.

Mountain scenery, culture and authentic local experiences.

Andringitra Mountain

Andringitra Mountain

Madagascar’s High Altitude Jewel, Andringitra is a hikers’ dream come true, located is Madagascar’s second highest peak, and no matter where you wander the landscapes will spoil you with views. The mountain itself resembles a huge granite organ, with fluorescent facings of granitic grooves representing the largest known system of granitic grooves in the country. As you progress through the immense and lonely ecosystem, the silence is broken only by the Honourable and very echoing calls of the male Ring-tailed Lemurs defending their own territory, bringing a sense of mystery to the undertaking. Botanists will marvel at the strange high-altitude rocky vegetation, worthy of equal mystery and awe with a resilience to match that of the landscape.

Ranomafana

Ranomafana National Parc

A Refuge for Distinct Biodiversity, Ranomafana is home to the rare Golden Bamboo Lemur, the very reason it was set aside as a protected area. This park also provides refuge to the Critically Endangered Greater Bamboo Lemur; Milne-Edwards’ Sifaka; and a number of other rarer species. In the day, you can hope to see astonishing endemic Birds such as Vanga species, Ground Rollers, Asities, or the elusive Brown Mesite.

In the night, the forest reveals its secrets: Geckos with leaf tail, colourful Frogs, many species of Chameleons, and the world’s smallest Lemur – the Rufous Mouse Lemur, one of the Earth’s smallest primates. Botanists will find a wealth of endemic plant species, including the rare Orchids of rainforest ecosystems. Ranomafana includes the Centre ValBio, which is a premier research station, welcoming students and researchers from all over the world, in order to study the unique biodiversity and environment.

Anja Park

Anja Park

A Must-Stop on the Way South, this small Community Reserve, nestled right beside the road on the way to Southern Madagascar, is simply unmissable. It’s one of the best places to spot Ring-tailed Lemurs – and maybe even meet a real-life “King Julian”! The reserve is also home to Reptiles, Birds, and unique vegetation. What makes Anja even more special is its community-based management: The park is run by a local villagers’ association; and all proceeds go directly to support the surrounding community.
